A sector worth over €51 billion proposes a pragmatic approach to the European packaging regulation to combine industrial competitiveness, innovation, and waste reduction.

The Economic Impact of the Packaging Supply Chain

The Italian packaging supply chain remains one of the most robust sectors of national manufacturing. Including packaging manufacturers and companies that develop packaging, printing, and converting technologies, the sector has a total value of €51.3 billion.

In 2024, domestic packaging production reached 17.26 million tons, up 1.1% compared to the previous year, with a turnover of €37.96 billion. The sector represents 3.3% of Italian manufacturing turnover and 1.7% of GDP, confirming its key role in the production system. Forecasts indicate moderate but stable growth, with +1% in 2025 and an average annual increase of +1.2% through 2028.

The European Challenge and the Supply Chain’s Proposals

The supply chain is currently faced with the new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which aims to reduce packaging waste by 15% by 2040. At the same time, consumer demand for increasingly safe, practical, and sustainable solutions is growing. To address this transformation, companies are calling for a stable dialogue with institutions and clear regulatory tools that involve the entire value chain: those who produce, those who use, those who recover, and those who recycle packaging. The goal is to adopt a pragmatic approach to European regulation, encouraging investment and innovation capable of translating environmental objectives into concrete industrial results.

In this context of transformation across the sector, companies throughout the supply chain are also being called upon to strengthen their commitment to the energy transition. CPS Company, part of the Cassoli Group, has for years oriented its strategies and operational choices toward more sustainable production models.

For the Group, respect for the local territory and the environment represents a guiding principle that runs through the entire organization, from production activities to procurement and supply operations. This commitment translates into initiatives focused on energy efficiency and the reduction of environmental impact, in line with the challenges currently facing the entire packaging supply chain.
